Finding Joy in the Midst of Uncertainty

June 10, 2020

It might seem frivolous to write a blog post about making art right now, in a world full of uncertainty and fear. I’ve wanted to say just the right things that might be uplifting or helpful, instead of just making happy talk.

But it’s not frivolous at all. We need beauty now more than ever. We need the meditative healing that creativity can provide. Drawing, painting, singing, dancing, baking bread, digging in the dirt — all are things that can save us from despair at the sadness all around us. We need to practice at least some of them every day.

I haven’t done much painting, except for a large series of birds in watercolor that I had started in preparation for an Earth Day event, which was to include a solo show at the public library. I had even ordered frames and table-top easels, because there would not be any wall hanging space. Many of these are already framed, waiting for the day when we can hold the event, which is now tentatively planned for October. I have my doubts whether that’s going to even be a possibility. So in the meantime, here is part of my bird show.

But what has brought me great joy were the flowers in early spring  . . .

And sketching in the park when the weather warmed . . .

And just like every other person in the country, I’ve baked bread.

I hope you are finding ways to create joy in your own world.

I absolutely agree Martha and I’m so glad to see you creating, etc.! I have to admit that I truly believe life is such a blessing. 🙂 Seeing all of the things going on today makes it so hard to remember that. Art is such a joy and is the reminder we need right now. I love your birds. They’re so sweet. I have to admit that I’ve always absolutely loved flowers. The petals always make me think of different stages in life. Then there’s the fact that you need to water and feed flowers for them to grow. I love that… just like a person. Wonderful and strong when taken care of! Anyway, great post. Can’t wait to see more. 🙂 You take care. Namaste

Martha, art is what keeps us going in these uncertain times. I love seeing your artwork and photography. I have turned over a new leaf after a fallow period of about two years. It started during lock down with a little sketch book of ‘Self-Isolation’ drawings/sketches. I then enrolled in Virtual life drawing courses with @LondonDrawing. Had not done any for 25 yrs and I got hooked. Am now doing a course to try an work more loosely, intuitively and hopefully more freely. I am actually enjoying what I am doing and it fulfills a deep need.
Stay well and stay safe dear Martha.

Elly, I have seen a lot of your new work on Instagram and it’s lovely. So nice to see you busy with your art. For us, and perhaps for people who have never even tried it, art making taps into a place inside us that soothes the soul. I can’t help believing it changes the body for the better as well.

I love getting your comments, so please don't be shy! Your feedback is valued.
