Sean Scully: ‘You never get to Nirvana’

March 1, 2011

I love Sean Scully’s paintings, and the way he articulates his vision and talks about his philosophy on art in general.  I just discovered this video yesterday when it was shared on facebook by Cyndy Goldman. I can see why she loves his work as well.

It was especially wonderful to hear him talk about the colors of his surroundings and their influence on his recent work. I hope you are as inspired as I am after watching this video.

Martha, Thank you for posting this video about Sean Scully’s paintings. A few years the Metropolitan Museum had an exhibition of his paintings , “The Wall of Light” . I thought that it was one of the best exhibitions that I had seen in some time. The paintings had a presence that draws you in. Sean Scully has an incredible sense of color. His pastels were dense with rich color.
I also enjoyed his watercolors. It was great to view an exhibition in which an artist communicates to us those intangible qualities using paint.

NJ, I will never forget seeing an installation of Scully paintings for the first time. I had admired his work for a long time, but there is nothing like seeing them face to face. The human touch is so evident. Glad you enjoyed the video.
