A Favorite Painting From the Haiku Series

October 12, 2010

“Haiku 75″ – Acrylic on Cradled Panel, 8 x 8 x 2”

This painting came back from the Key West gallery that is now closed. After going through all of those, plus my newest ones, and sending several to the Tampa gallery, I still have this one here in my studio inventory. I imagine it’s a good idea to build an inventory here in case I find another gallery sometime soon.

I started looking on my hard drive for an image of this painting and couldn’t find one anywhere. Strange and unusual, though I probably had already put it on a CD at one time or another. I photographed it again so that I could show it here.

The black rectangular piece is a thick piece of paint skin that I cut to shape.

Wow! This is stunning Martha! The colors and design really give it an Asian feeling. Really love this one!! 🙂

Thank you Itaya! I’m glad to see it again. Of course, not seeing it again would mean they sold it, but still . . . nice to get reacquainted with it.

The colors are lovely, and I really like all the textures. I wonder if you could share how you come up with the names for your series – what makes this painting part of Haiku as opposed to another series? I’m just curious. Your work is such an inspiration to me.

Hi Jackie – glad you like this one, and the textures. My series names are hard to come by, so I keep them for a while. I look for series titles that somehow evoke features of my work.

Someone at a gallery told me that people really respond well to works that are part of a series. The style doesn’t change — just the series names.

That one speaks to me in the way that many of todays very graphic work does…I like the brevity of the images, the color etc. Hope you are having a lovely fall. I was up in Pine Mt. this past weekend looking at distressed property, but didn’t buy anything…it was so nice to be HOME!

Beautiful leaves just beginning to turn, big black crows, deer in the night, shadows moving about my land, a million stars in the milky way above, dark quiet night punctuated with the howling of dogs

    My Haiku. Love Toni

Crazy what happens if you turn it 90° left…
    Love the bold colors.
The sizes of the red and the blue-green hemispheres are so well balanced. Could be the Golden Section.

Eva, thank you for looking at it from more than one angle. I sometimes can’t decide which way they go until I’m ready to put the wires on the backs! 🙂

It could be the Golden Section at work here, but is completely unconscious on my part. Nice to know, because we like to think we have internalized some of these principles.

Thanks, Martha. Naming is always the hardest part for me. I work in series sometimes as well, so it’s interesting to hear your perspective on it.

I love getting your comments, so please don't be shy! Your feedback is valued.
