Ideas For A New Painting

August 20, 2010

Yesterday we spent the morning taking our granddaughter out for breakfast and then to the airport. It was such a wonderful visit and we were sad to see her go. What a kid! She actually seems to enjoy her grandparents.

Then when we got back into town, we visited my sister’s husband in the hospital and did a little shopping afterward. It was a full day.

But there is art in my future. Today I started on an interesting little project. A family member has commissioned me to do a small painting of some beautiful black Angus cows in a pasture just up the road from here. It’s to be a surprise gift to the owner of the farm.

So this morning we drove out to the farm so I could hopefully take some photographs for reference. Unfortunately the cows were too far away to get any good pictures. They were staying cool in a pond way out under the trees, and I completely understood.

Luckily, I’ve photographed them before, and I think I may use the picture above. These pictures were taken last fall, very late in the afternoon just before the sun went down, and I didn’t think I would like the lighting. But the more I look at them, the more I think this one could work. Done well, some great colors could be brought out. Notice I said “done well.”

There will be a new house on the spot shown in this picture, and the cows will eventually be moved to another field. So I want to paint this spot as a memory of how it looks now, before the house goes there. It’s a beautiful spot overlooking a wide creek.

The cows in this picture were looking at us quizzically, wondering if we had a treat for them (which we did.)

It will be fun . . . I think!

Oh I can’t wait to see this one unfold Martha! I think you’re right…it CAN be done and done wonderfully.

Reminds me of the farms I grew up around in that part of the country. I notice the trees are turning colors in the background. I thought perhaps fall was already headed your way at first until I read the rest of your post. 🙂

I am extremely interested in the results of this commission. I have been in experimentation mode and considering working more often from photographs, and would love to see how you, as an abstract and collage artist, work with this kind of scene.

Look forward to your interpretation of this photo….I grew up on a farm with cattle, and this image is FABULOUS. Fall being my favourite season!!!

    Gee Martha

I think your cow painting looks mysterious and beautiful. Good Job!
Remember when Brava did all the cow pictures?

Martha — A departure for you but intriguing! love that deep, dark shadow on the left — sets up a wonderful contrast and curve. Good luck!
