Collage “Passageways Five” and a Gift to Myself

May 1, 2010

“Passageways V” – Collage, 5 x 7″

Early this week I placed an order for art supplies. Some of them I did need and some I didn’t. When the box came I tore it open so I could get to the stuff I didn’t need. It was a gift that I decided to splurge on for myself, that I’ve wanted for a while. It was three different paper punches. I chose a 1-9/16″ square, a 1-11/16″ circle, and a 2″ daisy punch. I’ve fantasized about how I would use these shapes in collage, and the possibilities are undoubtedly endless. I love how an array of different designs, all cut into the same shape, have a unity of their own. I’m excited about having some fun with them. I ordered these from Blick Art Materials.

Here’s an assortment of punches that I’ve already created from magazine pages and a few assorted papers.

What fun! I can’t wait to do more. Maybe tomorrow, since it is my day off.

I will probably also create more collages like the first five in the Passageways series.

These punches look great fun and have endless possibilities in collages, I think we might see a lot of these shapes in the future.

I’m looking forward to discovering what to do with them, Ian. I’m sure you’ll see them pop up here and there.

    Oh, FUN! Enjoy!
(I’ve been kept away from blogland for too long…for silly reasons like sickness and work. 🙂
Now, to catch up on your former posts…

Nothing makes an artist happier than a box full of new supplies. It inspires, energizes, and delights us more than others can understand. Have fun (it looks like you have started already)!

Oh, yes! I’m so with you, Caroline. Had some fun with them this morning too. These things are addictive.

I’m so glad to see other folk like to use punches for collage. I’ve always felt a bit like I was cheating.

Not that it stopped me. LOL.

Well, the circles and the daisies would certainly be way too labor intensive for me! LOL! But the squares . . . now those are just as easy to cut with a straightedge. I like grids that are a little off anyway, rather than perfection. So it turns out that the square punch sort of defeats the purpose.

I agree. I like them for, complex or graphic precise shapes.
My squares, rectangles and “strips” are often leftovers from other projects.
