When in Doubt, Do Something

May 27, 2009

Here’s a progress picture of the paintings that I started on Monday.

WIP 0527

It might not be immediately apparent that I’ve done anything at all on them. But there are layers of tinted gel medium on the blue one and the yellow-green one. The white one is still drying with a heavy coat of light moldinig paste.

The three tall skinny ones have had some collage elements and text applied, though you can’t see them very well in that picture. So here’s a better look.
WIP2 0527

All of these layers may disappear, or some of them will show through subsequent layers. It depends on what the paintings ask of me. It’s at this stage that I don’t have a road map. I sometimes have a good idea what I want to do next, but often I don’t. When I don’t know what to do, I just do something. That action might give me a clue to the next thing. And so it goes.

    Dear Martha,

When I look at your work I always get a “why didn’t I think of that”?! I know it is a ridiculous question.

You will, however, be relieved to know I am happy with how these are shaping up. 🙂 I love the colours and the style/design. In particular, out of the three tall ones – the one in the picture on the extreme right is my favourite.

    Sherrill 🙂

Thanks, Sherrill. There is a piece of real collage near the top. That will get covered up with some texture maybe.

WOW! Where do all your wonderful ideas come from! You’re just amazing. The blue my fave, followed by the extreme right tall one. It is generous of you to share your methods for creating these wonderful paintings with us, and helpful for a learner like me. Your email is the highlight of my day.

Sandra, I hope some of these ideas give you a jumping off place for inspiration. I wish were were all in a real live workshop together!

You know I absolutely love your work and seeing these WIP shots is a thrill! I love the tall ones.

My favourites are looking up. I like what I see so far. I’m glad there’s someone else whose approach is full speed ahead when in doubt.
