In Love With Dots

May 18, 2009

Lemon Lime Cherry

“Green Dots and Cherry Red”
Acrylic on Cradled Panel, 8 x 8 x 2″

There’s something about dots that makes me smile. This is a new painting fresh from the studio this week. The adventures in color continue. I have all kinds of sculptural ideas for these They will still be paintings, but more three-dimensional things will be happening.

Intriguing. The structure is weird somehow. Nice bright colours, but it comes alive…

Yes, Eva, the structure is weird on purpose. I like randomness within a sort of loose order. It could have just as easily been a “nine patch” of dots, but for my taste that would have been too predictable.

Like the irregularity of the structure and would be very interested to know how you plan size and positioning.

Sandra, I don’t plan these for the most part. I try to keep them spontaneous, but I’m accustomed to being on auto-pilot and rely on my eyes to make decisions about the overall design and positioning.

I love orange. We had to choose a colour to study for a whole term at one stage. My colur was, yep, orange 🙂

Hey Cath – Orange is obviously a plentiful color around here. Sunsets, tropical fruits, citrus, and of course a beautiful flower named Lantana along the roadsides . . . to name a just few things.

Yeah I have to be careful too, Carole. Not eating the paintings and keeping the brush out of my coffee!
