Little Mysteries

March 20, 2009

box-11107“1110.7” – Acrylic on Panel, 8 x 8″

I don’t think I’ve shown this one before. It’s long since gone to its forever home. I do like referring back to works that I haven’t seen for a while, to keep them in the back of my mind in order to maintain some kind of ongoing dialogue with them.

This one has several indistinct layers of marks and texture. When working I like to keep enough spontaneity that I can’t always determine the exact process by which I got from point A to point Z. I don’t try to over-analyze it or to make the creation of one piece into a pat formula for future works. But I do want them all to subtly belong in the same family. This is a tightrope walk at times.

When you create a work of art, do you like to leave behind little mysteries or riddles for yourself just to keep things interesting?

Kandinsky never liked people to see things or persons in his abstract pictures, but sometimes shapes become forcing and make us see faces that weren’t meant to be there. Okay — back to the abstract composition. … //// …. #+//+####=”= [[>
    (a secret language)

    love it.

Yes – don’t they just! Now I am seeing things too. If you tilt your head slightly to the right, you can see a perfect dog’s face in the grey area in the raised shape. One could find other faces in there as well. Funny humans — always looking for faces.

I don’t intentionally leave little mysteries behind in my work, but I love it when I look back upon someone I created and discover the mysteries waiting to be found.

Thank you Joyce! Sorry to say the people didn’t even show up! But we got a wonderfully neat and clean house to live in for a few days. Now we do it all over again for Sunday’s open house.

Ha! I curated a show once I titled “Little Mysteries”. Just seeing that title brought back a slue of memories! 🙂

I’m glad that made you smile, Sheree. And BTW I just love creative show titles. For some reason I’ve been on the same wavelength — thinking of possible titles for future shows, but with no idea where they might be used!

For instance: Fish from the Sky (as discussed in a previous blog post this week.)

I love getting your comments, so please don't be shy! Your feedback is valued.
