Cigar Box Art

Cigar Box Challenge

cigar-box-b3

I’m not sure whether to call this piece collage or assemblage. Maybe just a mixed media piece. In any case I thought I’d share it. It was done as a challenge assignment with my Brava group a couple of years ago. Our challenge was to make art using a cigar box, with the emphasis on the color yellow. About eight different pieces were created for the challenge, and it was fun seeing all the variety of approaches to it. I cut out a window in this box, reinforced it and lined it with collage, then placed a wooden block inside that has a different image on each of its six sides. That’s a twig just above the opening.

I like themed challenges as a way to get you out of your usual pattern of working. The piece sits on top of a bookcase in my office and I look at it often. Lately it’s showing me some new possibilities for my current work.

For instance, what would be wrong with simply doing a textured painting on the outside of a cigar box? Even the cardboard variety can be reinforced with acrylic coatings. Hm. Or what about a three-dimensional collage element incorporated into a  textured painting?

As I like to say . . . Why not?

More cigar box art here. In fact that whole site is full of inspiration.

Camcorder Update
I’m only just now reading the user’s guide that came with my new camcorder. I put so much energy into shooting the practice video early this week and playing with the editing software that I’m not ready to start again! I like that I have put this out there, because now I feel more of a commitment to do it.

    Oh Martha,
This was a cool post! I have about a dozen cigar boxes sitting in the corner of my bedroom. I got them planning to do something with them. I have got to it yet. I think this post will inspire me to get off my butt and do something!!! LOL
    🙂

    Hi Martha,
These are exceptionally cool. Beautiful collage.

By the way- wanted to leave a comment on your new post and WordPress wont let me. I turned off my pop up blocker and it still wouldn’t allow a post. The error message says ‘no post match your request.’

That’s strange, Vikki. I don’t know what could be happening. I’m going to check around WordPress to see what’s up.

Glad you liked my cigar box.

    Martha:
Nice sculpture. We had a show called Cig Art several years ago when I worked for the Art Museum of South Texas. Do you correspond with any other cigar box artists?

I haven’t, Kay, because I don’t really consider myself a cigar box artist. But I could so easily be led down that path! I love them.
