The Business Side of Art

January 12, 2006

I haven’t forgotten that it’s almost the middle of the first month of this brand new year. There will be a great shifting of gears this year, as it is now time to consider the income potential (or lack thereof) of any venture into new artistic territory. There will be little time for playing around. That truly is not a hardship; I am equally left and right brained, and am accustomed to business challenges. It’s a simple matter of time management. Any spinning of wheels in the guise of group shows, juried competitions, gallery-related travel, hauling and shipping paintings, workshops, and volunteering will be seriously slashed to make room for a game plan for the next level of income. There are databases to update, a new print and CD portfolio to produce, mailings to do, contacts to make and track. This first part of the year, at least, will be mostly business.

It can be a tricky thing to do and most artists have no clue howto handle the biz part. As you said – it takes both parts of the brain to do it.
I’m doing the same thing, but with about 10 years of biz experience behind me…although not with my art involved.

Yep, Christa, me too. I’ve had a lot of years in the corporate world, and the last ten were in marketing. It’s interesting and strange to be suddenly marketing oneself.

KJ – interesting? One can hope!!
