My thoughts emerge out of my feelings,
Like plants that grow out of the earth.
To find the roots of my happiness,
I must loosen and dig in the dirt.” – Tom Lescher

Summer is upon us now, and I still haven’t had my usual studio time. This is going to change when we get back from a week at the beach that has been planned for a long time. We’ll be sharing a house with our son and his family, which should be a wonderful break.

I’ve promised my students that we’ll start classes up again when I get back early next month. They seem very excited to get going again, and I find I miss them. They have become such a nice group of friends.

The garden has kept me out of the studio during this long spring planting season, and I’ve noticed a strange thing is happening. I haven’t felt any urgency to get back inside. Maybe I’m getting ready for some new inspiration. If my experience holds true, this time away from my art will reveal some kind of new direction, and that’s always a good thing.

But for now, I’ve been outside as much as possible. That requires me to get the day’s chores over with before the heat of the day kicks in, and then by that time I’m recovering for the rest of the day. Pretty soon it will be too hot to be out there at all. I know this from past experience. Gardening is a joy, but isn’t for sissies.

This is a new painting that went to the gallery in Florida. I always have mixed emotions about sending my new works away, possibly never to see them again. I hope you like this one.

I hope I can be forgiven for my absence from this blog. This spring has been busier than normal. The garden keeps getting bigger and bigger, and my creative energy has tended to go into the great outdoors now. Somehow gardening is just as energizing for me as painting, and in many ways they work on a parallel path. My tendency is to experiment without having to know everything there is to know about the process. Sometimes I just throw a lot of seeds on the ground without making neat rows, and when they come up they give me beautiful random patterns and colors. Like this lettuce bed, for example. There are 5 or 6 different kinds of lettuce planted together. This way I don’t have to worry about weeds — the lettuces crowd them out. We pick whatever we want for that day and go back again for more. Always fresh and delicious!

And this bed was planted in a similar way. It has kale, purple mustard, and garlic.

The tiny round leaves just above the bottom left hand corner are freshly-added okra plants, which are planted throughout these beds. When the greens are gone due to the summer heat, the okra will take their place.

So I guess you can say in general that I don’t like to follow rules, recipes, instructions. I like to get comfortable with my “medium” and then just experiment a lot.

And one more picture for you . . . and then I promise no more garden pictures today. These are self-watering buckets that I built from instructions that I found online.

I really do like this design because it uses only one bucket instead of two. Here’s the link if you’re into that kind of thing. I modified the design (there I go experimenting again) to include filling tubes made of pvc pipe scraps, and didn’t bother to put the plastic covers on the tops. But it isn’t a bad idea – the plastic really does prevent evaporation of the water, so I may add those later. The netting covering the two on the left is to protect my tiny plants from the birds.

Studio Update

On the art front, I delivered my two paintings to the annual juried show here at the Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts, and then didn’t make it to the opening. I don’t know when I’ve ever let that happen, but as I said it’s been busy almost to the point of exhaustion. So I didn’t go. Wouldn’t you know I won an award! It wasn’t a major award, but an honor just the same. So of course I’m embarrassed about not having been there. I won’t let that happen again.

I’m working at the art of gardening as well as creating work in the studio. Paintings for the Florida gallery are still my main focus in the studio — that is, when I can get myself in there to spend some quality time. In between rainy spells, I’ve been getting out to the garden to continue the prepping and weeding and cleaning and planting. And that’s saying nothing of the harvesting and preparation of several things that have wintered over, like greens and beets, which are labor intensive.

These rainy spring days provide studio time and a break from garden chores. The above painting is another one of 16 that I’ve sent to the gallery to date. I have several more in progress, which get some paint added, and then I wait for that to dry, and then wait for some inspiration for further direction. It’s a long slow process, but one that fits in well with my lifestyle. Nothing urgent or forced. Just slow, steady progress.

Note: The blue you see on the sides of these boxes is painter’s tape. I’ve decided I want to leave the natural wood on these, so I’ll protect them until the paintings are finished.

Things like moving loads of pine needles, leaves and grass clippings from the pile way out back to the flower beds and garden paths, compost from the compost pile to the garden beds, and picking up tons of sticks and pine cones and tossing those onto the burn pile.

And then there will be planting. The little seedlings in my mini-greenhouse aren’t doing much. If a few survive I’ll be lucky. I don’t know what happened to them, but I think they’re confused by the cold-ish nights. On nights that are forecast to be down in the thirties, I bring the whole thing inside, since it’s very portable. I have to believe that when the warm nights come, they’ll start to wake up and put out better roots.

The iris at the top is one of a bucketful of bulbs that my sister gave me last fall from her yard. The pansies are in two big pots, still here since Thanksgiving. Pansies are amazingly tough and can stand a lot of cold temps.

Meanwhile, the garden is waking up as well. The fall plants that have wintered over are starting to grow greener and taller. We still have plenty of beets, red mustard, onions, and garlic, and the English peas that we planted in February are starting to climb up the trellises and are blooming.

Soon I’ll have to get the beets out of the ground and deal with those so I’ll have room for peppers and cucumbers in their place. By dealing with the beets I mean pickling them. That will require me to set aside a day. By the way, I save as many of the beet greens as I can by using up the small leaves in salads and freezing the rest for sauteeing and soups. Not much of anything goes to waste in my organic garden.

More art — just not the kind that’s done in a studio.

It’s time to sit back, take a breath, and share with you some of what’s been going on in the studio. When we last visited, I had started on a series of new paintings for Michael Murphy Gallery in Tampa.

In the two weeks since I started that project, I have shipped 16 new pieces out and will be starting on more soon. These paintings are small and are best displayed in multiples, so I like to do several at a time.

While all that was going on, I had just photographed and uploaded the first 8 images of the paintings for documentation. I always send thumbnails of my work on an inventory sheet for the gallery. I managed to get that done, but then soon after that the computer where I kept all my art images and art business files crashed. I had gotten complacent over time and hadn’t backed that one up regularly, and of course I came close to losing the photos of my newest paintings, which were already on a brown truck somewhere between here and the gallery. After a week of hand wringing and sleepless nights on my part, the computer tech pronounced the mother board dead, but thankfully managed to retrieve all of my photos and document files.

I now have a shiny, sleek, brand new laptop. It took a little while, but I’ve installed all my graphics software and copied the files I need onto this one. Whew. I can breathe now! Maybe I’ll sleep better too. And I have learned a very important lesson: Files you may think you could survive without . . . you probably really do need them, and would miss them if they were gone forever.

Meanwhile, back in the studio, shown above is a peek at some of the work I’ve sent to the gallery. Not all of these in this picture are new pieces. They are a mixture of recent ones that haven’t been shown in a gallery before, and some are brand new ones.

This week I spoke with a gallery that needs a number of new paintings to replace pieces that have sold, and that’s always very good news. But it puts everything else I was doing on the back burner for a few days. Now I am in full production mode in the studio. There are breaks in the work to allow for lots of drying time, so it’s not something that has to be attended constantly. In fact, there are times I wish I could keep going, but can’t because of wet paint. So I still get to go outside with the dogs and pull a few weeds in between.

As always, I’m sharing a studio shot of current works in progress. I like to go back and look at these after the pieces have been completed too, because sometimes they go through many changes.

In addition to these are seven more that are ready to go with wires, signatures, and titles. Those just need to be photographed properly so I can show them as well. Some of them are completed paintings that I’ve reworked. When I’m working in multiples this way, it’s easier for me to see what I want the standard to be with new work. I change or rework some pieces to conform to my current body of work. Not better or worse, just evolving.

As these come together, I feel good that I’ve done my very best work. It’s important to me to document and get good photographs to inform future work. After all, I’m sending these out into the world and quite possibly will never see most of them again.

The sun is finally out a few days a week, something we haven’t seen for several months. I think this year it was especially gray for longer periods, so that after a time a kind of sad feeling crept up on me. I’ve never been diagnosed with Seasonal Affective Disorder, because I generally don’t believe labeling perfectly normal feelings as disorders, nor would I ever take a drug for it. But this year I noticed it more than ever before.

At first I would get a momentary nagging feeling and think to myself “geez I’m in a funk” or “why am I feeling so down?” I wondered why I was dragging around even after my 2 cups of coffee, and wanting to sleep all the time. I would look for reasons like hearing someone died or was ill, or watching too much news on TV.

But it wasn’t any of that. It was the absence of sunlight and fresh air. I know that now, because this past week I made sure I took advantage of the sun, even though it was still chilly. And toward the end of the week, it was downright spring-like. I got out there with my wheelbarrow and moved some pine needles and leaves around to use as mulch on future flower beds. I hung out with the dogs and weeded the old garden boxes. I lifted my face to the sky, breathed deeply, and savored it for as long as possible. We can now leave the windows open some nights, which lifts my spirits more than you know. And the difference is amazing. No more SAD days!

Here is another happy little collage that I created last week.

I’m two for three with my entries into this year’s annual juried gallery show Arts Alive at the Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts.

If you are anything like me, you will immediately focus on and second-guess your <del>rejected</del> non-accepted entries to a show, rather than simply enjoying the approval and validation of certain other works. Human nature being as it is, I can’t help myself. At first. Then my immediate secondary reaction is to acknowledge that this is an individual juror with many, many choices before him or her. And what if none of the three works had been accepted? I would simply get myself to the show to see all of the wonderful art that made it in.

But I have to say I’m excited to be an exhibited artist once again, and get to attend the opening night gala. Garden reception under the stars, live music, wine, great food, great conversation, and two historic homes filled with beautiful art.

Now that the results are in, I can show the pieces that will be in the exhibition. I didn’t want to jinx it by posting them beforehand.

When it’s seed starting time, my studio has to make room for my seeds. In the past, I’ve had them spread out on a table, not leaving much room for art. But now I have this really cute little greenhouse, which sits in the morning sun in the window, and then on days that are warm enough I take it out to the screened porch for some more direct, though filtered sun.

Looking around the studio, it’s easy to see I still have a lot of tables up from when we had classes. I may just leave them, if I can discipline myself not to clutter them all. It is nice to have plenty of room to lay out whatever I’m working on.

One More New Collage

Undercurrent – Collage, 5×5″ mounted on 6×8″ Blue Paper

When I want a collage that spills over the edges of the picture plane, I always have to consider the backing on which it’s mounted. Or the other way around. In this case I had a sample piece of very nice Strathmore paper and began with the collage rather spontaneously and randomly. The color of the backing becomes part of the design when done this way.

I came across a great Gelli Plate demo video that I want to share with you. It inspired me to get out to the studio last weekend for another fun day with my plate. It’s titled “You Can’t Fail With a Gelli Plate with Carolyn Dube” and is perfect for illustrating how easy it is to make any number of simple to complicated prints.

On Saturday, I made a stack of new sheets by printing patterns onto just about everything, and then made a few more papers using painted surfaces and added drawing and doodles to them. Then after admiring them for a bit, I grabbed the scissors and cut them down to manageable collage-sized pieces. Those went right into my collage basket.

Here’s a new one. If you’re on facebook you might have already seen this one.

No Title Yet – Collage, 5.5 x 6.5″ on 8×10 backing

Notes re the above collage . . . Several weeks ago I had made some big drips of thin bright green paint on a rather large sheet of white paper and set it aside. I scanned the drip for use in digital art. So on Saturday I took a look at it and wanted to use it as collage paper, but didn’t like the harsh bright green on a stark white background, so I brushed black over it with a very dry, very long brush. The result ended up looking like wood grain. The background of this collage is actually three pieces of that same paper, reassembled in a new way, jigsaw fashion. The rest of the collage is made up of doodle fragments and a piece of a gel print.

Here’s another new one . . .

Quixotic – Collage with etching fragment and painted papers, 4 x 4.75″ on a 6×7″ backing

This one actually has a piece of an old etching of mine, visible on the left hand side. Nothing is safe from my scissors.

I hope you enjoy the video. I did.
