Microcosm IV

By Martha Marshall

Fourth and last of the series (so far.) All are 10 inches square and are at Michael Murphy Gallery in Tampa.

These four paintings were done together, as I was thinking of them as a grouping. I originally did them for a show back in November at Dunedin Fine Art Center. After the show had ended, I took them to the gallery. I think these are quite a bit different from my usual paintings on boxes. I am still enamored with the idea of just letting things happen with paint and texture, so drawing is just a sometime thing. Still, as a series it would be worth exploring.

I haven’t “visited” these lately, but it’s always funny to me that when you see work again after not looking at it for a while, you sometimes like it again. Here is the grouping shown together.

I know it works the other way too sometimes. Sometimes I think “Oh God let me get rid of this thing before anybody else sees it!! Please say it isn’t just me.

I know all too well (I hope most artists do) the “oh got let me get rid of…before anyone else sees it” feeling. LOL!

What gets me is when you just can’t connect with a piece you’ve done and everyone else seems to just LOVE it! I was recently asked to re-visit a piece I’d done 3 versions of years ago (sold all 3). It’s one of my least favorite EVER and though $$tempting$$, had to pass on it this fourth time.

I really enjoy the Microcosms as a group! I think your instinct to create them as such was dead on.

Thank you John – Yep, I’ve been there too. Things other people love are not necessarily what I’m thrilled with. We aren’t always the best judge of our own work. It’s good to have some distance from them sometimes.

    Martha,
These are just outstanding. When you see them as a set they take on a whole different dynamic. Really beautiful.

There’s a real young artist on my blog I’d love for you to check out. ( Mike with MDE Art ) Anyway, he’s been working in just ‘line’ with washes of color. I think you’d enjoy the style of his work.

I love the drawing. Very contemporary and edgy.

Martha — Back from the Cape and had to stop by and view your “new home.” Your new series is very organic, elemental and the palette is great — very hushed — you’re amazing! Good luck with the new site.

I like the new digs. I’ll re-link you to this site in my blog roll.

These are wonderful. I’m a bit science minded, received a microscope on my 10th birthday. I find this series very interesting. They’re intimate on a cellular level. The looseness of your drawing hand gives them life.
